Sardinia has beautiful beaches and a stunning coastline. I know this, you know this, everybody knows this. But Sardinia in the fall is magical.
Generally speaking, I always prefer traveling in the shoulder season rather than in the busiest months because when the crowds are gone, the experience inevitably becomes more authentic and overall pleasant.
While the fall is a fantastic season to travel to Sardinia, depending on which month you arrive, it might not be ideal for the beach. However, it’s great for trekking, sightseeing and for cultural trips in general.
Especially towards late fall, beach resorts might be either closed or have fewer services.
I understand Sardinia is not as organized as major tourist destinations like Rome, Venice, and Florence, but what travelers should keep in mind is that this region of Italy offers a completely different experience.

Why Sardinia in the fall: 5 reasons
The weather
The more I age, the more I suffer from the summer heat. When I was younger, I loved sunbathing but as the years passed, I’ve preferred milder temperatures, if not downright winter cold.
But the shoulder and lower seasons are not winter, rather the beginning of April and autumn, so late October through November. And during this time of the year, the weather is great.
Traditionally, from November 1st, the temperatures start to drop, but the month is generally not cold, just cool and pleasant.
In November, you will likely not be able to swim or lie down on the beach, but you can certainly enjoy a walk on the beachfront and anywhere. Sometimes, November is rainy, but in recent years, the rainfall has been less frequent, and even when it rains, it hardly lasts.
However, the fall starts on September 21st, which is a great month to still go to the beach. Many people know this, so you might find some beaches still crowded, even though not as crowded as in August.
October generally offers mild and lovely temperatures, and some still go to the beach, preferring the hottest hours of the day.

The experience
When visiting Sardinia in the fall, particularly in the shoulder season, the experience you are likely to have is a more authentic one than just sitting on the beach under the scorching sun.
Even booking a local guide to show you the gems of a trekking route, when the crowds are gone, your experience will be slower, more private, and you’ll have a more quality time.
The festivals
Autumn, in general, is a big festival season. Specifically, there is a very large kermesse that lasts literally the whole fall season in the fascinating Barbagia area in Nuoro province.
More than thirty beautiful towns like Dorgali, Mamoiada, Orgosolo, Ollolai, Tonara, Fonni, Belvรฌ and Nuoro itself will open their doors to local food producers, artisans, and artists to showcase their traditions to guests from all over Sardinia and the world.
Every weekend, from the beginning of September through mid-December, you will have the chance to savor traditional dishes and immerse yourself in the local culture.

No crowds
Are you still dreaming of some beach time and scenic trekking routes in Sardinia? From September through November, you won’t find the crowds you can witness in August.
In Sardinia, in the fall, you won’t experience crowds or traffic, making your experience seamless and definitely better than in August. Especially if going to the beach is not your first priority.
While the beginning of September will still see some beach crowds, towards the end of the month and for the remainder of the fall season, the crowds really fade away.
Sightseeing
From the end of September through November and December, the lack of crowds and the mild weather will make it perfect.
Together with spring, fall is also one of the best seasons for sightseeing in Sardinia. Truth be said, apart from some mountainous areas, winter in Sardinia is not too cold, so this is also a great season if you are planning a cultural tour.
